Trump allows China to resume Iranian oil imports after ceasefire

President Trump announced that China can resume buying oil from Iran, reversing earlier threats of sanctions.

AhlulBayt News Agency: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that China is now permitted to continue purchasing oil from Iran, signaling a major departure from his previous “maximum pressure” policy.

His statement came shortly after Israel halted its military campaign against Iran, with Trump showing hesitation toward deeper American involvement in the conflict.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed credit for brokering a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, 12 days after Israel launched an unprovoked war that triggered a forceful Iranian response.

“China can now continue to purchase Oil from Iran,” Trump wrote, adding, “Hopefully, they will be purchasing plenty from the U.S., also. It was my Great Honor to make this happen!”

This shift comes just weeks after Trump had warned Beijing of severe penalties for continuing oil imports from Iran.

Earlier this year, Trump signed a presidential memorandum reinstating a campaign of maximum pressure on Iran, including sanctions on Chinese firms involved in Iranian oil trade.

Despite U.S. sanctions, China remains Iran’s top oil customer, with private refiners reportedly importing over 1.5 million barrels per day.

Beijing has consistently rejected unilateral U.S. sanctions, asserting that such measures lack international legitimacy.

Trump’s reversal also reflects concerns that sanctions on Chinese oil imports from Iran could drive up global oil prices and spark domestic backlash in the U.S.

Amid the Israeli-Iran conflict, Trump ordered airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities early Sunday. Iran retaliated by launching missiles at the U.S.-run Al-Udeid Airbase in Qatar on Monday night.
